LeBron and Bronny James made history by becoming the first father and son in the NBA to play for the same team.
According to a report from ESPN, LeBron’s eldest son – Bronny James was selected by the Los Angeles Lakers at number 55 in the second round of the 2024 NBA Draft.
The James family was at a dinner party when they learned the news, a source told ESPN. After the news was announced, LeBron took to Twitter to celebrate Bronny’s first career milestone.
“In NBA history, there has never been a father and son playing in the same uniform in the NBA and that feels like something that could be magical,” Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka said. “We know, and of course we respect, that LeBron has made his decision to leave. But if all goes well, he stays with our team next season. NBA history can be made in a Lakers uniform.”
Bronny’s selection in the draft does not guarantee that the Jameses will actually play together next season. Nor does it guarantee that Bronny James will be on the Lakers’ roster. But it certainly raises the profile of basketball fans and the world. The organization’s executives will surely take advantage of this opportunity to launch effective commercial campaigns that will bring in huge revenue for the team.
Bronny James is expected to make his Lakers debut on July 12 in Las Vegas, in the Summer League opener against the Houston Rockets.
Bronny James, a guard, was listed at 6’3” on the University of Southern California roster. However, his actual height was 6’1” at his pre-draft physical. This made him one of the shortest players in the NBA, but his physicality and defensive ability earned him a chance to make it to the NBA the following season.
The eldest James played one season of college basketball at USC (University of Southern California) and averaged 4.8 points, 2.8 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game last season. He played in 25 games, missing the first part of the season due to a medical procedure last year to correct a congenital heart defect, which was discovered after he went into cardiac arrest during a summer workout.
