Bret Hart Vs. Mankind & 14 Other Matches That We Don’t Realize Happened

8 Things You Didn’t Know About Stone Cold’s Match At WrestleMania 19

Steve Austin and The Rock ended their legendary WWE rivalry with arguably the best match at WrestleMania 19.

Most, if not all, of these matches only happened one time. They might not have been classic encounters either, but they are all interesting footnotes in the careers of all of these stars. They also make for good trivia questions to stump your friends with.

15 Steve Austin Vs. Randy Savage: The Two Battled At Two Different Points In Their Careers

They Fought In WCW

Stone Cold Steve Austin vs Randy Savage WWE WCW
Date May 27th, 1995
Event WCW Saturday Night
Winner Randy Savage

Two icons from different eras clashed in a time where Randy Savage was passed his prime, and Steve Austin was yet to reach it, facing each other on an episode of WCW Saturday Night. Savage came out on top in this one, although the match wasn’t what it could’ve been, had the two each been working within their hottest runs.

Eric Bischoff wasn’t a fan of Austin, soon letting him go, with WWE picking him up. With what would eventually happen in the WWE, it’s clear to see Bischoff made a big, big mistake and perhaps the younger Austin should’ve been given the win over an aging legend.

The Brothers Never Battled The Original Pairing

Hardy Boyz Road Warriors
Date October 1998
Event Shotgun Saturday Night & Sunday Night Heat
Winner The Hardy Boyz (Heat), LOD 2000 (Shotgun Saturday Night)

These two teams are some of the most highly regarded in the history of tag team wrestling, though coming from different generations of popularity. The Hardy Boyz never managed to face off with the original pairing of Hawk & Animal, however they battled against combinations of Hawk & Droz, and Animal & Droz, on Shotgun Saturday Night and Sunday Night Heat respectively, with the teams sharing a win each.

13 Chyna Vs. Trish Stratus: Two Of The Biggest Names In Women’s Wrestling Collided

It Was A Brief Encounter

Trush Stratus vs Chyna
Date April 30th, 2001
Event RAW
Winner Chyna

If women’s wrestling was as highly regarded as it is now, then a match between Chyna and Trish Stratus could easily have been the main event of any WWE show. When two of wrestling’s most notable names in history clashed in the ring, it didn’t set the world on fire.

They did face off in mixed-tag action, but they only had one singles match which lasted under two minutes on an episode of Raw, with Chyna emerging as the victor. Its an underwhelming dream match for sure.

12 Kenny Omega Vs. Bryan Danielson Vs. Seth Rollins: Three GOATs Of A Generation

All Three Are ROH Legends

Bryan Danielson Kenny Omega Seth Rollins
Date November 8th, 2008
Event ROH Bound By Hate
Winner Bryan Danielson

At AEW’s Grand Slam, Kenny Omega and the newly rechristened Bryan Danielson faced each other in what many considered a dream match. However, the two had faced a few times in the past, but one unique entry into that list, was a triple threat with none other than multi-time world champion, Seth Rollins, going by Tyler Black at the time.

Three of the biggest names in modern wrestling faced off at Ring Of Honor’s Bound By Hate show in 2008, before they broke out into being mega stars. The match was a lot of fun, which is expected with the names involved. It wasn’t perfect by any means, but it still received a huge ovation from the crowd following a Danielson win.

11 Bret Hart Vs. The Rock: Hart Takes On The Future Final Boss

It Was Before The Rock Hit His Prime

Bret Hart vs The Rock WWF Raw
Date March 31st, 1997
Event RAW
Winner The Rock (Via DQ)

These two legends of professional wrestling very nearly missed the boat on ever having a match with each other, with Hart leaving the WWF in 1997, with The Rock just being a rookie at that time. They managed to have a match for the Intercontinental Championship, just after Hart’s incredible heel turn at Wrestlemania 13.

In a match that many would assume had only taken place on video games, ended in a lousy DQ finish – not quite the ending that a match with these two names deserved.

10 Bret Hart Vs. Mankind: A New York City Brawl

A Clash Of Styles

Bret Hart Vs Mankind Cropped
Date January 25th, 1997
Event Shotgun Saturday Night
Winner Bret Hart (Via DQ)

As a native New Yorker, Mike Foley certainly has a thing for New York City girls dancing it up in the club scene. The only problem with that, is in Webster Hall, the girls wanted nothing to do with Mankind. As they were being terrorized by the deranged freak, Bret Hart came to rescue the ladies. The two legends fought each other tooth and nail in an underrated match that got interrupted when Owen (who was commentary) accosted the Hitman, causing the DQ.

They Defined A Generation Of Tag Teams

Steiners Vs Harts Cropped
Date January 11th, 1994
Event Wrestling Challenge
Winner N/A (Double Countout)

By the time the Steiner Brothers had made it to the WWE, they were already among the elite tag teams in the world. They also landed there as Bret and Owen Hart were still teaming up, shortly before their breakup. It led to this technical tag team family feud.

The Harts used their speed and technical prowess (and even a little cheap shot here and there), while the Steiners would work to out power their opponents and heave them around with the suplexes. With neither team wanting to do the job, they ended in a double countout and wild pull-apart brawl.

8 CM Punk Vs. Rey Mysterio Vs. Eddie Guerrero: A Forgotten Triple Threat

It Was A Championship Match

Rey Mysterio Vs Eddie Guerrero Vs CM Punk
Date March 17th, 2002
Event IWA Mid-South
Winner Eddie Guerrero

Having two of the greatest Luchadors of all time come to your Indy show to perform is a major coup. Rey Mysterio and Eddie Guerrero were already huge names in the business. They both came to IWA Mid-South in early 2002 to challenge for the heavyweight title. Standing in their way was defending champion, CM Punk. The Second City Saint was already carving a name for himself as the King Of The Indies, but he knew as well as everyone else in attendance that he’d get swallowed whole if he didn’t up his game on this night.

7 Sting Vs. Big Bruiser Mastino (Kane): An Enhancement For Sting

It Was A Squash Win For Sting

Kane As Bruiser Mastino
Date March 6th, 1993
Event WCW Saturday Night
Winner Sting

Throughout his now near forty-year career in the ring, The Stinger has put together an impressive resume of dream match after dream match with the likes of Hulk Hogan, Ric Flair, Kurt Angle, Seth Rollins, and now on AEW as a mentor to Darby Allin. But some of the Icons big matches weren’t always considered as a big match. Back in 1993, he took on the future Big Red Machine on an edition of WCW Saturday Night.

Here, Kane was known as Big Bruiser Mastino. This contest wasn’t more than an enhancement match, but it also just one more notch in The Franchise’s belt that he was able to work with another up and coming legend.

It Was Early In Both Their Careers

RVD as Robbie V Vs Vinnie Vegas
Date March 27th, 1993
Event WCW Worldwide
Winner Vinnie Vegas (Kevin Nash)

The battle of Michigan happened on WCW Worldwide in early 1993. Battle Creek native, Rob Van Dam, then known as Robbie V took on the Motor City’s Kevin Nash (as Vinnie Vegas). The two future Hall Of Famers met in a fairly competitor match, Robbie V showing off the trademark agility he’d become famous for. It’s undercard matches like this that showcase that talent in WCW was never the problem, the mismanagement of the talent was. Both men were gone later in the year to become Diesel and RVD respectively.

5 Randy Savage Vs. Shawn Michaels: Two Legends Collide For The WWE Title

Savage Wanted Something Bigger Against HBK

Randy Savage Vs Shawn Michaels
Date April 19, 1992
Event Rampage Tour
Winner Randy Savage

Before he left the WWE, one of Randy Savage’s grandiose ideas was to have a long torch-passing feud with Shawn Michaels. Instead, he got to have this title defense against The Heartbreak as part of The Rampage tour.

Despite their past history, the Sensational Sherri tried to get involved, but her former King was able to fend off her assault as well. A young fresh heel Shawn Michaels and as able to give the champion a run for his money, even pulling off a top rope sunset flip during the match, something that was unheard of at the time. Given Michaels’ history of matches with the greats, its no surprise this match was pretty good.

4 Shawn Michaels Vs. Rey Mysterio: A Tribute To Latino Heat

They Gave It Their All For A Friend

Rey Mysterio Vs Shawn Michaels Cropped
Date November 14, 2005
Event RAW
Winner Rey Mysterio

Just days after losing the beloved legendary Eddie Guerrero, the WWE Universe came to Raw to pay tribute and celebrate the life of Latino Heat. There might not have had a better way to do that than to have one of his best friends and greatest in-ring opponents, Rey Mysterio collided with one of Eddie’s spiritual brothers, Shawn Michaels. The emotional match only happened this one time in history and despite both men feeling the pain of loss put on a clinic, one of the best matches in Raw history.

3 Stone Cold Steve Austin & The Rock Vs. The nWo: Never Before, Never Again

A Clash Of WWE And WCW

Rock And Austin Vs The nWo
Date March 11, 2002
Event RAW
Winner nWo

It took nearly a year after purchasing WCW, but finally the nWo had made their way to the WWE, and despite an underwhelming run overall, immediately targeted both The Rock and Stone Cold. In a huge WWE vs. WCW matchup, the five superstars met in a charged Raw main event on the road to WrestleMania X8. The nWo were able to utilize their extra man advantage and defeat the two Attitude Era stalwarts. But it was also the first and only time The Rattlesnake and Hulkster were in the same ring.

2 Kurt Angle Vs. Owen Hart: A Battle Between Technical Legends

It Has Never Been Seen

Kurt Angle Vs Owen Hart Cropped
Date May 10, 1999
Event Shotgun Saturday Night Dark Match
Winner Owen Hart

Your Olympic hero has long said how much he would have loved to wrestle Bret Hart. That unfortunately never happened on TV, but some fans did see it in 1999 in a dark match. The King Of Harts, Owen Hart took on a then young and comer named Kurt Angle.

Considering that WWE tapes everything, the match still exists somewhere in Titan Tower. Angle has always spoken highly of the encounter and that Owen was able to impart a lot of knowledge to Kurt just from this one match.

A Clash Of The OVW 2002 Class

Brock Lesnar Vs Batista Cropped

Date September 28th, 2001
Event OVW
Winner Batista

It’s pretty wild to think that despite the massive impact both Batista and Brock Lesnar made, they had little to do with each other on the main roster. With both being part of the OVW Class Of 2002, they were able to clash in developmental when Batista was still the demon of the deep, Leviathan. Big Dave was able to steal a victory from Lesnar thanks to help from his valet at the time, Sin. That leaves Brock two and two against Evolution.
