“He’s A Nut”: AEW Star Looks Back On Working One Of Sting’s First Matches With The Company

One former TNT Champion looked back on working with Sting during The Icon’s early days with AEW.

When Sting was injured in WWE in 2015, many thought The Icon’s decades-long career had come to an end. However, in December of 2020, the star shockingly debuted in All Elite Wrestling, beginning an incredible run that would culminate with his retirement match at Revolution in March of 2024.

Speaking in a new interview with Chris Van Vliet, former TNT Champion Scorpio Sky recalled working with The Icon in his second AEW match at Double or Nothing in 2021. The bout ranks as one of Sky’s favorites, and he noted that Sting originally didn’t plan to wrestle traditional matches when he first became All Elite.

“That’s one of my favorite matches ever. I have two matches that are my favorite matches I’ve ever had and that’s one of them. The cool thing about that was, in the beginning, Sting told us ‘When I signed here it was only to do cinematic matches. I was never supposed to do an in-ring match.’ He’s like, but I trust you guys. And so that was like, Okay, we can’t mess this up.”

Continuing, Sky recalled himself and Ethan Page trying to protect The Icon during their tag team bout against Sting and Darby Allin. However, the WWE Hall of Famer wanted to go all out in the match, performing stunts that would be difficult for men half his age.

“So we just did the best we could to obviously protect him. But he’s a maniac and wants to do crazy things as well. He’s like diving off the stage, he’s like ‘Suplex me on the stage!’ It was just like are you sure? okay. He’s a nut. He was in great shape. We had to talk him into not wearing a shirt. He wanted to wear his shirt. We’re like bro you’re in great shape.”
