Mother Curry established a rule for her children that they were not allowed to date until they turned 16 years old. On one occasion, Sydel Curry, who was 14 at the time, requested her mother’s permission to attend a gathering where boys would be present.

Being a strict mother, however, Sonya Curry did not grant her approval. In a moment of anger, Sydel exclaimed, “You are the worst mother in the world.” The mother was deeply affected by these words, expressing, “I felt my throat constrict.”
