Nia Jax retained the WWE Women’s Championship with a pinfall victory over Bayley at Bad Blood on Saturday.
The rematch was a long time coming, as Jax won the title from The Role Model at SummerSlam on August 3 due in large part to interference from Ms. Money in the Bank Tiffany Stratton.
Stratton again made her presence felt on Saturday, coming down to the ring to attack Bayley before teasing a possible cash-in of her title opportunity with both women down. But Jax confronted her before she could cash in.
The Center of the Universe later distracted Bayley, which allowed Jax to gain the upper hand and retain the WWE Women’s Championship.
Jax won the Queen of the Ring tournament in order to earn the women’s title match against Bayley, who had become champion by beating former Damage CTRL stablemate Iyo Sky at WrestleMania 40 after winning the women’s Royal Rumble match.
After dropping the title, The Role Model was hard at work to earn a rematch, but another worthy challenger in her friend, Naomi, was also trying to position herself for an opportunity.
Jax decided to give both of them a chance to battle her for the WWE Women’s Championship, but it came with a catch.
Jax and Tiffany faced Bayley and Naomi in a tag team match on a recent episode of SmackDown. If either babyface got the win for their team, they would challenge Jax for the title; but if they were to lose, both Bayley and Naomi would have to leave SmackDown.
Bayley and Naomi ultimately got the win, but it was due to both of them pinning Jax at the same time, meaning it remained unclear who would be her opponent at Bad Blood.
In order to determine a No. 1 contender once and for all, Bayley and Naomi squared off in a singles match on the Sept. 27 edition of SmackDown, and the former prevailed to secure the No. 1 contendership.
Bayley vs. Jax was then made official for Bad Blood, but the challenger had an uphill climb, not only due to the strength and ability of her opponent but also because of Stratton’s potential involvement.
Jax’s many advantages allowed her to retain at Bad Blood, meaning it may now be time for a new challenger to step up and attempt to knock her from her throne.
