Jey Uso’s Intercontinental Victory: The Final Blow to The New Day’s Dominance

Jey Uso has won the WWE Intercontinental Championship, winning his first singles championship in 14 years while seemingly disbanding his biggest tag team rivals The New Day. Uso’s victory shocked everyone when he defroned Bron Breakker on WWE Raw.

Fans expected Breakker to hold the championship for months if not years.  Uso had tried and failed to win the Undisputed WWE Championship, World Heavyweight Championship, WWE United States Championship, and WWE Intercontinental Championship over the past few years.

Uso has been attempting to strike out on his own away from his twin brother, Jimmy Uso, and The Bloodline.

Jey Uso Gets What Xavier Woods Wants – Again!

On the November 11, 2023 episode of WWE SmackDown, Jimmy and Jey Uso beat The New Day’s Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods in an Undisputed WWE Tag Team Championship match. This meant The Usos surpassed The New Day’s record to become the longest-reigning WWE Tag Team Champions.

It was the ultimate showdown between the greatest men’s tag teams of the modern WWE era. Over the past few months, Woods has been feeling insecure because he hasn’t held a singles championship.

How Does Intercontinental Championship Win End “The New Day”?

Jey Uso’s WWE Intercontinental Championship victory makes him only the second person to follow in their father’s footsteps as WWE Intercontinental Champion. His father, Rikishi, held the title for 16 days in 2000.

Curtis Axel was the WWE Intercontinental Champion in 2013 for 155 days. His father, Mr. Perfect, was a two-time WWE Intercontinental Champion in the early ’90s.

The victory also means Uso has stepped away from simply being a tag team wrestler. Something that Woods cannot stake a claim to.

This is also something Woods has been struggling with recently. Woods’ partner, Kofi Kingston, is a four-time WWE Intercontinental Champion, three-time United States Champion, and one-time WWE Champion.

The latter title he had to wait 11 years for a shot at – which he won. On WWE Raw, Woods and Kingston have been experiencing tension in recent weeks.

Woods feels that Kingston has gone behind his back to seek help to win matches. First, Kingston enlisted Odyssey Jones as a backup.

Then he secured the help of the LWO. But the big issue is Kingston never told Woods.

Woods thinks Kingston doesn’t respect him enough to tell him the strategy in matches. Woods also worries Kingston feels the two of them are not enough to get a win, so that’s why he’s had to seek outside help.

When the LWO’s assistance backfired and cost The New Day a World Tag Team Championship match against The Judgement Day, Woods lost it big time. Woods refused to accept an apology from Kingston and LWO’s Rey Mysterio, accusing them of not respecting him because of his lack of a singles title.

If Woods was on the edge before Uso won the WWE Intercontinental Championship, he’s over it now.

Sealed With A Social Media Post

A simple congratulatory post on social media seems to have sealed the death knell for The New Day. Without the context of Woods feeling insecure, his post celebrating Uso’s win would just seem like one pro supporting another.

But given everything that’s going on, it is practically a kiss of death to Kingston.

Woods is angry, hurt, and ready to turn his back on Kingston to prove to himself and everyone that he can strike out on his own. Woods is the perfect first opponent for Uso.

It makes sense that Woods would give everything up for a shot at a single title. His resentment at Uso for getting there before him makes sense as they were both once decorated tag wrestlers.

It also reignites one of the greatest feuds of all time. Get ready for a heartbreaking betrayal by Woods on Kingston, and him staking a claim at Jey Uso and the WWE Intercontinental Championship.

The beauty of a Woods versus Uso feud for the WWE Intercontinental Championship is it pits together two people who cannot afford to lose. Uso needs to prove he can hold onto a solo title, whilst Woods needs to win one to show he is a solo wrestler.
