The end of an era: Rafael Nadal’s enchanted forehand

Rafael Nadal, at the age of 38, announced his retirement from professional tennis, leaving a void that will be difficult to fill in the sports world and millions of fans around the world.

Nadal has a formidable forehand.

More than just a great tennis player, Nadal is a symbol of perseverance, resilience and incredible sportsmanship. Every time he hits a powerful forehand down the line, people are amazed by his perfection and feel like they have just done the impossible.

The Epic Chapter

Nadal’s signature shot, with his left arm pulled back and his biceps tensed before the racket swung, has become one of the most deadly weapons in tennis history. Opponents who thought they had the advantage could only watch in amazement as the ball flew past and landed in the court.

Nadal can hit that shot from anywhere on the court, flying all over the place to unleash a “weapon” that makes many players wary.

Although Novak Djokovic has surpassed Nadal in the number of Grand Slam titles, there is no denying that Nadal’s success is an epic and admirable chapter. The trophy room at his academy in Mallorca is a testament to his extraordinary career.

The most notable of these are the 14 Roland Garros trophies, symbolizing Nadal’s undisputed dominance at Roland Garros. He turned this tournament into his “kingdom”, losing only three matches during his 17-year career.

Nadal is an all-round tennis player.

Nadal also quickly broke the stereotype that he was only a “clay court specialist”. After two consecutive defeats to Roger Federer at Wimbledon, the Spaniard made history in 2008 when he won one of the most dramatic finals of all time. His 9-7 victory in the fifth set after being down two sets not only affirmed Nadal’s physical resilience but also showed his steely spirit.

Nadal never allows himself to dwell on a point for too long, whether he wins or loses. He always plays each ball with great concentration, never lowering the intensity of the game. But unlike the tenacious Nadal on the court, he is a completely different person in real life: shy, simple and loves peaceful days with his family in his hometown of Manacor.

A career in sports seemed like the natural path for Nadal, who comes from a famous sporting family. His uncle, Miguel Angel Nadal, was a star player for Barcelona and the Spanish national team. But it was Toni Nadal, another uncle, who shaped Nadal’s tennis career.

Nadal started training with his uncle Toni at the age of four, and he was not given any special treatment. On the contrary, Toni was stricter with his nephew than anyone else, laying the foundation for the perseverance and discipline that would later shape Nadal’s career.

Toni stressed the value of patience and respect. This explains why Nadal has never smashed his racket or shown excessive anger on the court throughout his career. Even when he became the world’s number one player, Nadal has not changed.

Mr. Toni Nadal has a great influence on his nephew’s success.

When asked about his grandson’s success, Toni simply replied: “My grandson is nothing special. If he can do it, anyone else can do it.” This modesty, while a hallmark of Nadal, sometimes makes him feel frustrated when his success is downplayed.

In 2016, Carlos Moya, a former world number one and Mallorcan native, joined Nadal’s coaching staff. A year later, Toni decided to step down from coaching his nephew to focus on running the family tennis academy. At the time, many believed Nadal’s peak was over, as his body suffered from increasing injuries.

But under Moya’s guidance, Nadal not only did not decline in form but also revived strongly. He changed his playing style, attacked more and returned to his peak form.

Since 2017, Nadal has gone on to win eight more Grand Slam titles, reasserting his dominance at Roland Garros and winning two more US Open titles. His victory at Roland Garros in 2020 saw Nadal equal Roger Federer’s record of 20 Grand Slams, before both were surpassed by Djokovic.

Injury cannot defeat Nadal

However, a persistent foot injury put Nadal’s career on the back burner in late 2021. No one could have predicted how Nadal would perform at the 2022 Australian Open. Yet, once again, he pulled off a miracle, winning his first title in 13 years. At Roland Garros that same year, Nadal overcame his pain to win the title, despite having to leave Paris on crutches after the tournament.

Nadal’s ability to maintain his peak career into his late 30s is an achievement that cannot be understated. With countless injuries and the pressure of a brutal style of play, his perseverance has reached the limits of his body.

Nadal’s retirement not only marks the end of an epic chapter in tennis history, but also leaves a huge void in the hearts of fans. For those players who no longer have to deal with his deadly forehand, there may be some relief.

However, to the tennis world and millions of fans, Nadal became an irreplaceable legend.

The Sports section introduces the autobiography “Unstoppable: My life so far” published in 2017. In the book, Maria Sharapova speaks honestly about everything surrounding the busy life of a professional tennis player, including her once-shocking love affair with Grigor Dimitrov.
