Roger Federer’s Emotional Response to Dominic Thiem’s Retirement: A Heartfelt Tribute

Roger Federer used social media to send a message to Dominic Thiem following his retirement from tennis.

The Austrian announced earlier this year that he would be bidding farewell to the sport after competing at the Vienna Open.

On Tuesday the 31-year-old took on Italy’s Luciano Darderi in front of a capacity crowd at his home tournament.

But despite his best efforts, Thiem suffered a 6-7(6), 2-6 defeat to bring an end to his fantastic career.

Dominic Thiem addressed the crowd following his the last match of his career and he was given a standing ovation as he hung up his racket.

Many tributes have been issued for the 2020 US Open winner in the week leading up to his retirement, and Roger Federer posted one of his own.

He posted a photo via his Instagram story of the pair during the trophy presentation after the 2019 Indian Wells final, which Thiem won 3-6 6-3 7-5.

Alongside the photo the 20-time Grand Slam champion wrote: “An illustrious career comes to a close. Congratulations, Domi.

“No matter the surface, you always found a way to beat me with your thunderous backhands. But more importantly, you did it with grace and sportsmanship.”

Though Thiem opened up a 4-2 lead against Darderi, the 22-year-old quickly quelled any hopes of prolonging in his career and in the process ended his seven-match losing streak.

Thiem, who reminded fans of his brilliance with some scorching backhand winners, then took the microphone to address the fans who came to see his final match.

“I’ve had so many nice goodbyes in the last few months, but today I want to say thank you for all the sensational years,” said Thiem. “I am only a part of this career.

“The whole journey has been an absolute dream and I want this afternoon, this evening to be yours. I couldn’t have imagined it any better. Thank you!”
