Passing the Torch: Roger Federer Officially Surpassed by Fellow Swiss Star

Roger Federer and Stanislas Wawrinka are icons of Swiss tennis, having won the 2008 Beijing Olympic gold medal together in men’s doubles.

World tennis legend Roger Federer had a record broken by his compatriot Stanislas Wawrinka at the 2024 Swiss Indoors Basel tennis tournament taking place this week.

Accordingly, Wawrinka surpassed Federer to become the oldest player to win a match at the Swiss Indoors Basel after “Stan The Man” defeated Adrian Mannarino 6-3; 3-6; 5-7 in the opening match on October 23. However, the journey of the player with the strongest one-handed backhand in the world stopped after he lost to young opponent Ben Shelton 6-7; 5-7 yesterday (October 24).

However, a lost record cannot erase the huge mark that Roger Federer has made in this tournament throughout his decades-long career. Federer holds the record for the most championships with 10; the most finals (15); is the only player to reach the final 10 years in a row from 2006 to 2015; has played the most matches (84) with the most wins (75); and is also the player with the most appearances in the tournament (19 times from 1999 to 2019).

This impressive achievement of the “Express Train” could have been extended if the COVID-19 pandemic had not raged, causing the Swiss Indoors Basel to be postponed for two years, 2020 and 2021. This tournament returned in 2022, but Federer had retired earlier in September of the same year.

Roger Federer and Stanislas Wawrinka are living icons of Swiss tennis with an impressive record of achievements. Together, the two brought glory to the country’s sports with a gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics in men’s doubles after defeating the Swedish pair in the final.

At the moment, Swiss Indoors Basel 2024 is taking place with exciting quarter-final matches taking place from tonight Vietnam time. Stefanos Tsitsipas faces Arthur Fils, Andrey Rublev faces Ben Shelton, Holger Rune meets veteran David Goffin and Denis Shapovalov faces Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard.

Felix Auger-Aliassime was the defending champion of the tournament but he was eliminated in the round of 16 by Perricard.
