Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard has clinched his very first ATP 500 title thanks to his superb win over Ben Shelton in the Basel Open final.
Mpetshi Perricard anticipated an emotional Basel final against Shelton, before the former beat the latter 6-4, 7-6(7-4).
Shelton overcame top seed Andrey Rublev on his way to the Basel Open final, along with the likes of Arthur Fils and Stan Wawrinka.
Mpetshi Perricard meanwhile picked up superb victories over Felix Auger-Aliassime and Holger Rune on his way to the trophy.
He needed to just 87 minutes to make it past sixth seed Shelton, with the Frenchman firing 22 aces throughout the match.
Despite the fantastic display from his opponent, Shelton may perhaps be disappointed with how he performed in the Switzerland final.
But in superb sportsmanship, Shelton has messaged the victor despite losing to him at the Swiss Indoors Basel.
“First ATP 500 title!” Mpetshi Perricard wrote on Instagram. “So much work, sacrifices… Thanks to my team and everyone who supported me on this journey. The process!”
Among those commenting on the social media post was runner-up Shelton, who wrote: “Too good big homie.”
Mpetshi Perricard will be full of confidence after his dominating display over Shelton, with the Frenchman using all of his 6’8” frame to help secure the win.
He has now climbed a huge 19 places in the ATP rankings from 50th to 31st after lifting the trophy in Basel, with Shelton climbing four spots to 19th.
Both players immediately move onto the Paris Masters this week, with Shelton taking on another Frenchman in Corentin Moutet.
The latter is a qualifier at the Masters 1,000 event, while his compatriot Mpetshi Perricard has been drawn to face Frances Tiafoe.
The Basel Open finalists have a huge task ahead of them in trying to make the second round in Paris, a tournament which also features world numbers one and two Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz respectively.
