Federer-Nadal: Looking back at the ‘great battles’ that shook the tennis world

Tony Godsick, Roger Federer’s long-time agent, has teased the possibility of an exhibition match between the Swiss “Express Train” and Rafael Nadal.

Swiss legend Roger Federer has called time on his illustrious career at the 2022 Laver Cup. He has not been seen on a tennis court since. He has been seen in the stands at a number of events, including this year’s Laver Cup, but has yet to play a match, exhibition or otherwise.

However, according to his agent, Tony Godsick, a return to tennis has always been the plan. Godsick has been with Federer for a long time and played a key role in organizing the Laver Cup. In a recent interview, Godsick explained that Federer would not play again unless he felt completely healthy, which is why he has not played any more matches.

“Since Roger retired, he doesn’t want to play another match until he feels physically fit,” Godsick shared.

If it is announced that Federer is playing anywhere in the world, the stands will be packed, the media will be there, and his presence is a very powerful tool to promote tennis or any other event.

Godsick mentioned a few exhibition matches they have played in the past, including in South Africa, and that something similar could happen in the future. An exhibition match with Nadal is certainly a possibility as they enjoy working together, and it is certainly the match that many people are looking forward to the most.

“In my mind is the attendance record they broke in South Africa. We like to do big things. If there is an opportunity to surpass that record one day, I’m sure Roger would consider it,” Godsick said of the possibility of a future exhibition match with Nadal.

“They all love working together and I love working with Carlos Costa (Nadal’s agent). I have a lot of good memories. We played an exhibition match on half grass, half clay in Mallorca… Anything is possible in the future.”
