Don’t Miss a Moment: WTA China Open 2024 Schedule, Results, and Live Streaming!

Qinwen Zheng will make her way to home turf after becoming the first Chinese player to win the Olympic gold in singles at the showpiece event in Paris 2024. Currently ranked World No. 7, Qinwen Zheng will be looking to make her mark at the upcoming WTA China Open 2024 – a WTA 1000 event, as the first Chinese to win the women’s singles title.

At this time last year, Zheng was on the verge of breaking into the top 20 before finally making the list at No. 19 in October 2023. She broke through after reaching the finals at the Zhengzhou Open in mid-October.

The Australian Open 2024 finalist will have one obstacle less in her path to the championship round. Defending champion and World No. 1 Iga Swiatek announced this week that she won’t be playing in Beijing due to personal reasons.

Zheng had overcome Swiatek in the semi-finals at the Paris Olympics, clawing her way back against the clay court specialist from 4-0 down in the second to hand her a shock defeat in straight sets. Zheng went on to overcome Donna Vekic in the final to enter the record books with her Olympic gold.

Zheng will still have to take on a formidable field against the remainder of the WTA top 20 in her bid for victory. Making life difficult for the Chinese will be two-time quarter-finalist Aryna Sabalenka, last season’s semi-finalist Coco Gauff and Zheng’s rival in the Olympic final, Donna Vekic. Sabalenka will take over as the top seed in Swiatek’s absence. The 21-year-old Chinese player made her main draw debut at the event last season, but made a first round exit against Elena Rybakina.

Other potential adversaries for Zheng include last year’s runner-up Liudmila Samsonova, the 2017 semi-finalist Jelena Ostapenko, 2016 semi-finalist Madison Keys and 2012 champion Victoria Azarenka. Outside of the top 20, the 2017 champion Caroline Garcia could be a hurdle in Qinwen Zheng’s aspirations in Beijing.

Aryna Sabalenka and Qinwen Zheng headline the top half of the draw, while Jelena Ostapenko and Jessica Pegula are the top seeds in the bottom half. With Swiatek missing out on action in Beijing, a new champion will be crowned for the fifth time.
