Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz and Aryna Sabalenka achieve 42-year first following Grand Slam success

Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz and Aryna Sabalenka’s Grand Slam success saw them achieve something in tennis for the first time in 42 years.

The tennis world is now reflecting on this season’s majors following the confusion of the US Open on Sunday.

Of the eight total Grand Slams on offer on both the ATP and WTA Tour in 2024, the aforementioned trio collected six of them, and wrote their names into the tennis history books in the process.

Jannik Sinner and Aryna Sabalenka claimed both the Australian and US Open titles on their respective tennis tours, while Alcaraz became the sixth and youngest man in history to win the French Open and Wimbledon back-to-back.

Sinner, Alcaraz and Sabalenka each won two Grand Slam titles during the 2024 season.

This meant that for just the fourth time in history, three players won two majors or more in the same year, and this has happened for the first time since 1982.

That year, it was Jimmy Connors, Chris Evert and Martina Navartilova, who won two Grand Slams each.

15 years earlier, Roy Emerson, John Newcombe and Billie Jean King and it occurred for the first time in 1964, when Emerson, Margaret Court and Mario Bueno claimed two of tennis’ four biggest honours.

Sinner claimed his first Grand Slam by winning January’s Australian Open, which included ending Novak Djokovic’s five-year winning run at the venue. He also recovered from a two-set deficit to beat Daniil Medvedev in the final.

Sinner’s second major came at the US Open where he defeated Taylor Fritz in straight sets to win both hard court majors in 2024.

On the other hand, Alcaraz defeated Sinner on the way to winning the French Open for the first time and successfully defended his Wimbledon title by defeating Djokovic for the second successive year at SW19.

Sabalenka entered the Australian Open looking to defend her title and she accomplished that goal without dropping a set. She ended the Grand Slam season by securing her first US Open crown 7-5, 7-5 against home favourite Jessica Pegula.
