The 2024 Paris Olympics will be only the second time 3×3 basketball has appeared at an Olympic Games. Many top WNBA players have confirmed their participation, but what about NBA stars?
Will NBA players compete in 3×3 basketball at the Olympics?
Although the NBA is the most attractive basketball league in the world, the vast majority of players here will not participate in the 2024 Olympics in 3×3 basketball.
While there is no rule against NBA stars competing in 3×3 basketball, to qualify for Paris, players must have a high enough cumulative score. And those points can only be earned in FIBA-run 3×3 tournaments. Almost all NBA stars do not compete in FIBA’s 3×3 World Tour. Therefore, they are not eligible for the Olympics.
The U.S. men’s 3×3 basketball team that will compete in the 2024 Paris Olympics includes Jimmer Fredette, Dylan Travis, Kareem Maddox and Canyon Barry, with Fredette being the only member with NBA experience. He has played 241 games over six seasons.
Unlike the NBA, their female counterparts in the WNBA still participate in many 3×3 tournaments and are eligible to participate in the 2024 Paris Olympics. The WNBA does not have a schedule as dense as the NBA, so female players have the opportunity to participate in other tournaments. The most prominent star of Olympic women’s 3×3 basketball is Rhyne Howard, a “super rookie” who has participated in the All-Star game for 2 consecutive years after only 2 seasons playing in the WNBA.
