Andy Roddick commented on how Novak Djokovic now approaches his tennis career.
2024 was an unusual season for the Serbian, who has played in just 11 tournaments and claimed just one title.
Now aged 37 and managing injuries more than before, the 24-time Grand Slam champion is managing his schedule carefully in a bid to keep playing tennis for as long as possible.
Djokovic said he is focused primarily on the Grand Slams and representing Serbia in events such as the Davis Cup, and factors such as his world ranking are no longer a priority.
At the age of 37 and with 99 titles and multiple records to his name, Novak Djokovic has nothing left to prove in tennis.
Djokovic achieved his final goal of becoming Olympic champion in August, where he produced one of his greatest performances to beat Carlos Alcaraz in the gold medal match.
Following his Shanghai Masters final defeat, Djokovic seems content with what he has achieved this year and is at peace if he does not qualify for the ATP Finals, which Andy Roddick thinks is the least of his worries.
“My interpretation of the way Novak is talking is that he doesn’t care about rankings any more. He knows where he has been,” the American said on his ‘Served’ podcast.
“You can’t take away the number one ranking forever. He has had it for more weeks than anyone. This is how the next phase of his career is going to go where he picks his spots. He doesn’t care about Paris, isn’t going to play in Turin.”
Djokovic’s next tournament after the Shanghai Masters was due to be the Paris Masters.
It is an event the former World number one has won seven times, more than any other male player.
However, he has now pulled out of the tournament, and with no other tournaments currently on his schedule for the rest of the season, a spot at the ATP Finals hangs in the balance.
Djokovic currently sits sixth in the Race to Turin with 3,910 points, but there are several players such as Alex de Minaur, Tommy Paul and Grigor Dimitrov all breathing down his neck.
They are now in action in either Basel or Vienna and Djokovic could find himself out of the ATP Finals qualification spots by the end of the week.
