After Curry and Team USA beat host France in the men’s basketball final, video from Hollywood Fix surfaced online showing Ayesha wiping away tears while her mother-in-law, Sonya, had a tense exchange with Paris cops.
The cause of the incident remains unclear, but Sonya is heard yelling that someone touched baby Caius Chai, the couple’s fourth child, who was born prematurely in May. Caius is seen in Ayesha’s arms throughout the ordeal.
Curry’s Golden State Warrior teammate, Draymond Green, is also heard saying that someone hit the baby boy’s head.
Part of the issue appears to be that the Currys and Green were being prevented from walking back to their car.
‘Look, they won’t let us go back over there where we came from,’ Sonya said in the video. ‘They won’t let the driver come here and they won’t let us go back over there.’
At one point a man begins translating for police and offers an apology: ‘Sorry about the baby.’
The 36-year-old Curry was not seen in the footage, but Green certainly made his presence felt in the gold medalist’s absence.
‘So, even after him hitting the baby in the head, there’s still nothing y’all can do to get them out of here?’ Green asked.
At one point an irate Sonya can be heard yelling at others off camera: ‘What? Stop saying my name. You should be helping us with the baby!’
Later, a tearful Sonya simply tells officers: ‘Let us get to our car.’
Although Ayesha is clearly crying, she remains silent throughout the confrontation.
The couple has not responded to the incident publicly.
Curry’s other son, Canon, is also seen in the footage draped in an American flag alongside his mother.
Steph and Ayesha announced the birth of Caius in late May.
‘Our sweet baby boy decided to make an early arrival!!’ the four-time NBA champion wrote on Instagram alongside a photo of the newborn’s hand. ‘He’s doing great and we are finally settling in at home as a family of 6! So grateful!’
It’s unclear when Caius’ original due date was scheduled, but the couple’s first three children were all born in July – the height of the NBA offseason. Eldest daughter Riley Elizabeth was born in July of 2012, while daughter Ryan was born three years later, followed by their first son, Canon, in 2018.
The son of former NBA guard Dell and brother of Charlotte Hornets reserve Seth, Stephen Curry is entering his 16th season, and already stands as the most prolific 3-point shooter in league history. In addition to his four NBA titles, Curry also boasts a NBA Finals MVP award, 10 All-Star nods, and two Most Valuable Player honors.
Curry met Ayesha as a teenager at church in his native Charlotte, where his father was playing at the time. The two ultimately married in July of 2011.
Since then, the elder Curry and long-time wife Sonya have divorced.
