WWE is undoubtedly the land of the giants in the professional wrestling world, bringing in more big men than most promotions in history. This is due to the focus on “larger than life” superstars being a big priority under the vision of Vince McMahon, and sometimes this meant that untalented giants were brought into the company. However, there were also some who were highly talented, and managed to even steal the show against fellow big men.
TheSportster’s rating system will take a look at which matches between giants are the best of the best over the years. These ratings will be compared to those from Cagematch.net and Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter.

The main event of this episode of SmackDown was headlined by a star-studded line-up as The Undertaker, Brock Lesnar, and Big Show went to battle in a triple threat match to become the new number one contender for the WWE Championship. The stakes added to the intensity and the story, elevating the match. The three men beat each other up in a hard-hitting hoss fight, and whilst the action was slow at times, every move felt impactful. There were some exciting near-falls that got the crowd on their feet, and the finish was great as Undertaker intercepted a superplex attempt and nailed a Last Ride on Lesnar for the win.

This is a very divisive match, but in our book it is one of the best giant vs. giant matches in WWE history. Kane & The Undertaker had told a thrilling story up to this point, and that bled over into their highly anticipated first meeting as the pair had a hard-hitting match at WrestleMania 14 which featured great power moves, surprising agility from both men, authentic animosity, and a larger than life feeling that made the match a spectacle. It might be slow and clunky in moments, but the storytelling really saved it. Kane looked super strong even in defeat, kicking out of two Tombstone Piledrivers.

In 2017, Braun Strowman and Big Show battled several times, and they developed a special type of chemistry. Going into their matches, expectations were low, but Strowman & Show displayed a great range of technical skills in this match on RAW, with chain wrestling, reversings, kip-ups, and more. Some of the action was a little slow and clunky, but it was still mightily impressive to see two men of their size doing things like this. The end of the match saw a brilliant ‘ring-break’ spot after a massive superplex from the top rope that sent the crowd into a frenzy.

Following their flat and plodding WrestleMania 30 match a year before, Brock Lesnar and The Undertaker aimed to redeem themselves at SummerSlam 2015, and they did just that in an entertaining big man match where they threw everything they had at one another. The start of the match was electric, getting fans on their feet and throwing each other around. The match did slow down at several moments, but there were great spots such as an announce table F5 and the iconic double sit-up. The finish of the match was where this was let down though, with the timekeeper seeing Undertaker tap, only to be called off by the referee who continued the match, allowing Undertaker to hit a low blow and knock Lesnar out with the Hell’s Gate.
6 Brock Lesnar Vs. Big Show (WWE Judgment Day 2003)
Overall Rating From TheSportster: 8/10

At Judgment Day 2003, Brock Lesnar and Big Show had a stretcher match for the WWE Championship, and it proved to be an enjoyable giant vs. giant match. The stipulation enabled them to add in several good spots which elevated the match and it made it more enjoyable for the fans, who got into the bout more and more as it went on. Lesnar brought a forklift into the equation, which was unique to see, and the storytelling during the match was strong too, especially with Rey Mysterio’s interference.

Storytelling | 2/2.5 |

Braun Strowman and Big Show wrapped up their feud in 2017 in one of the best giant vs. giant matches in history. These two monsters were locked inside a Steel Cage, and they used the cage well to add to the match, and it can be sometimes hard to do. They displayed impressive power, good technical wrestling for their size, and some crazy spots such as Big Show hitting a top rope elbow drop, and a massive powerslam through the cage wall after the match, which was wild to see.
4 Mark Henry Vs. Big Show (WWE Vengeance 2011)

In 2011, Mark Henry and Big Show had a shockingly good feud despite being two men of their size, and the best match of their feud came at Vengeance 2011 when they fought over the World Heavyweight Championship. They brought some impressive technical prowess that impressed fans, as they hadn’t seen much of that side from these two before. There was some great psychology too, as Henry masterfully targeted Big Show’s leg, whose selling was strong. The end of the match was wild, with only the second ever ‘ring-break’ spot, which made the crowd go wild.
3 Brock Lesnar Vs. The Undertaker (WWE Hell In A Cell 2015)
Overall Rating From TheSportster: 8.25/10
Storytelling | 2.25/2.5 |

Character Work/Psychology | 2.25/2.5 |
Crowd Reaction | 2/2.5 |
- Dave Meltzer Rating: 4.25 Stars
- Cagematch.net Rating: 8.26
Although Brock Lesnar and The Undertaker would have a better Hell In A Cell match, this clash in 2015 was still a great big man vs. big man match later on in their career. Undertaker looked energized as he and Lesnar beat the hell out of one another in a gritty, brutal bout that felt like a Cell match of old. It featured blood, the ring boards being exposed, and more, making it have the aura of an authentic fight between two larger than life individuals.
2 Brock Lesnar Vs. Roman Reigns Vs. Braun Strowman Vs. Samoa Joe (WWE SummerSlam 2017)
Overall Rating From TheSportster: 8.5/10

Character Work/Psychology | 2/2.5 |
Crowd Reaction | 2.5/2.5 |
- Dave Meltzer Rating: 4.75 Stars
- Cagematch.net Rating: 8.77
Four giants (maybe not so much Roman Reigns, with him being the smallest man in the match) clashed in one of the most wild and chaotic fatal four way matches in WWE history. This may not directly be just a “giant vs. giant” match, but with it involving the likes of Brock Lesnar, Braun Strowman and even Samoa Joe, it is worth a mention. The crowd were red hot in this crazy match, which was a car crash in the best possible way. There was power move after move, near-falls, a tempo of 100 mph, and a feeling of a new star being firmly made in Strowman, who looked incredible.
1 Brock Lesnar Vs. The Undertaker (WWE No Mercy 2002)
Overall Rating From TheSportster: 8.75/10
Storytelling | 2.25/2.5 |
---|---|
Technical Ability | 2.25/2.5 |
Character Work/Psychology | 2/2.5 |
Crowd Reaction | 2.25/2.5 |
- Dave Meltzer Rating: 4 Stars
- Cagematch.net Rating: 8.92
Brock Lesnar and The Undertaker had many classics, but their No Mercy Hell In A Cell match in 2002 was the best of their series. It was the perfect example of two giants going to war and trying to put each other down for good. It was brutal, bloody, and even hard to watch at times as Lesnar sought to destroy Undertaker’s injured hand. The pacing was quite slow, with focus being put on the violence and physicality of the match, making it a spectacle. Lesnar looked like an absolute monster coming out of this.
