The city is buzzing with excitement as the Kansas City Royals gear up for their first postseason appearance since 2015 — and no one is more thrilled than the Kansas City Chiefs’ quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who has been a part owner of the Royals since 2020.

This makes Mahomes a little more than just an average fan — albeit one who has never been in town when the Royals are in the playoffs.View this post on Instagram

“I’ve heard all the stories about how awesome the environment was the last time they were in the playoffs,” he told reporters on Wednesday. “They’re gonna go up against a great baseball team in the Yankees — [a] historic baseball team — so I’m just excited for these guys.”

Mahomes has experienced postseason baseball before, having attended Texas Rangers playoff games with his hometown team during his high school days in Tyler, Texas. Those experiences were memorable — but not entirely positive.

“I’ve had some close heartbreaks there with the Rangers,” recalled Mahomes. “The Royals are going to turn it around for me.”

The first two games of the five-game American League Division Series against the Yankees will be in New York. (The second matchup will take place while the Chiefs are hosting the New Orleans Saints on Monday night). The third (and the fourth game, if it is played) will be at Kauffman Stadium on Wednesday and Thursday.

“To be at the K,” said Mahomes, “[with] a sold-out crowd, hopefully — and get to see that October baseball there? [It’s] going to be special.”
