Jannik Sinner Makes History, Ascends to World No. 1 Throne!

Jannick Sinner is certain to retain the world number 1 ranking at the end of the season, and Sinner has made Italian tennis history with this impressive achievement.

With a 6-4, 7-5 victory over Tomas Machac in the semi-finals of the Shanghai Masters, Jannik Sinner is certain to end 2024 as world number 1. He currently has 11,010 points, 3,000 more than Carlos Alcaraz, who is ranked world number 2. Jannik Sinner becomes the first Italian to do so in the open era, since the rankings were introduced in 1973.

The 23-year-old Italian is the 19th player to hold the season-long world No. 1 ranking, and the fourth active player to do so after Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz. Sinner started 2024 with an impressive start to the year, winning the Australian Open and French Open. In doing so, he became only the third player in the Open Era to win both Grand Slams at the start of the year, after Guillermo Vilas in 1977.

In the race with Carlos Alcaraz for the year-end No. 1 ranking, Jannik Sinner has come out on top thanks to his consistent form. He won six ATP titles during the year, including two Grand Slams and two Masters 1000s in Miami and Cincinnati, along with ATP 500 titles in Rotterdam and Halle.
