Jannik Sinner is among the tennis stars paying tribute to Dominic Thiem ahead of his retirement from tennis.
Thiem will retire after the Vienna Open, with the Austrian having been dealing with an unfortunate wrist injury for some time.
But he will go down in tennis history for his efforts on the court, with his honours including the 2020 US Open title.
Thiem also reached a career-high number three spot in the ATP world rankings, having clinched 17 tour-level titles over the years.
Sinner meanwhile is already on seven tour-level titles in 2024 alone, with the world number one really at the top of his game.
But the Italian has admitted that, despite never taking on Thiem competitively, he has had a positive impact on his career.
As quoted by the ATP website, Sinner said of the Austrian: “I never played against Dominic in an official match, but as a human and a person, he has been amazing.
“It doesn’t matter what ranking I was or how young I was, he always said hi, and we had conversations… I still hope to see him around at some tournaments.
“He always brings a super positive energy in the locker room and the dining areas. I think all players will miss him.”
Aged just 31, Thiem seemingly could have kept going, but his wrist injury has clearly prevented that from happening.
Preventing him from further success meanwhile throughout the years was the presence of many star players.
Thiem certainly piled the pressure on Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic in terms of their Grand Slam successes and positions in the world rankings.
Nadal, Federer and Djokovic have paid tribute to Thiem, with the ‘Big Three’ well aware of just how special his career has been.
The Austrian will certainly be missed by the tennis world, with Thiem set to be followed into retirement by Nadal next month.
