World No. 1 Jannik Sinner will square off against Daniil Medvedev in the opening match of the Six Kings Slam on Wednesday. The head-to-head between the duo is poised at 7-7.
Sinner has had a fantastic season on the men’s tour this year. He not only opened his account at the Majors in Melbourne but also claimed the honors in New York. The Italian has captured seven titles in 2024, including the Rotterdam Open, Miami Open, Halle Open, Cincinnati Open, and most recently the Shanghai Masters. He also secured a runner-up finish in the China Open, losing to Carlos Alcaraz in the finals.
The 23-year-old started his campaign in Shanghai by cruising past Taro Daniel, Tomas Martin Etcheverry, and Ben Shelton in the first few rounds. He then overpowered the likes of Daniil Medvedev and Tomas Machac en route to the finals and outsmarted Novak Djokovic to lift the title. Sinner defeated the 24-time Grand Slam champion in straight sets, 7-6(4), 6-3.
Daniil Medvedev, meanwhile, has had an average season on the men’s tour this year. He’s chalked up 45 wins from 63 matches, including runner-up finishes in the BNP Paribas Open and the Australian Open. He also reached the semifinals of the China Open, where he lost to Carlos Alcaraz in straight sets.
Medvedev has been working towards raising his level on the main tour. He outfoxed the likes of Matteo Arnaldo and Stefanos Tsitsipas in the Shanghai Masters, but couldn’t make his mark against Jannik Sinner. The top seed defeated him in straight sets in the quarterfinals, 6-1, 6-4.
Sinner and Medvedev have faced each other five times this year with the Italian leading the charge 4-1. He outfoxed the Russian in Melbourne, Miami, New York, and Shanghai, but struggled to pass the test in Wimbledon. Despite a valiant effort in the quarterfinals, Medvedev outlasted him in five sets, 6-7(7), 6-4, 7-6(4), 2-6, 6-3.
The Riyadh crowd will expect an engrossing battle between the duo in the Kingdom Arena. Sinner will once again be a slight favorite to come out on top.
