John Cena has announced that the legendary WWE icon will retire from in-ring action next year. Bron Breakker, who is one of WWE’s most promising wrestlers hopes to face off against Cena, once he wins the Intercontinental title at SummerSlam 2024.
Sami Zayn currently holds the Intercontinental Championship, having ended Gunther’s historic 666-day reign at WrestleMania 40. At Money in the Bank, Zayn defeated Breakker and the duo are set to have a rematch at SummerSlam.
Breakker, a two-time NXT Champion is hoping to win his first major title on the WWE main roster and he will have the opportunity to do so on 4 August when he rekindles his rivalry with Sami Zayn. Cena has never won the Intercontinental Championship, so Breakker wants to give the 16-time World Champion a shot at glory before he calls time on his decorated career, he told SportsNow in an exclusive chat.
Bron insists that after losing to Sami Zayn at Money in the Bank, Summerslam will be the ‘biggest opportunity’ he will have to win the Intercontinental title.
“In terms of this match, he’s the front-runner because he’s proven that he could beat me already. To that credit I haven’t proved that I can have success on a big stage,” Bron Breakker said.
He continued, “SummerSlam and WrestleMania are toe to toe in terms of popularity and how big and crucial the show is. So, this is the biggest opportunity that I’ve had yet. I know how big the opportunity is and how big this is, the stage, everything. So it’s up to me to just be ready.”
Breakker is a second-generation wrestler, his father Rick Steiner and his uncle Scott Steiner (together known as the Steiner brothers) were renowned across the world for their in-ring exploits.
“I hope to be a part of WWE for 15-20 years,a long time. I want to make a career out of this here and along the way with being here that long, comes championship opportunities and stuff. So hopefully I can win as many championships as I can along the way, just prove that one day I can be a leader for this locker room and be a top guy,” Breakker said on his long-term ambitions.
Having already faced a defeat against Sami Zayn, Bron understands that he might not get another crack at the Intercontinental Championship if he fails to prevail at SummerSlam 2024.
“If I fail again then it’s time to move on and give someone else that opportunity because obviously I’m not fit for it. If I had two opportunities on huge stages and can’t win then I think it’s time to move on so that’s how big this weekend is for me it’s how big SummerSlam is, that’s how huge this is,” Breakker asserted.
“This is a turning point in my career in terms of where we are, If I win, I have to propel myself to a different level. If I lose, there’s a chance that my momentum falls and someone else takes that opportunity,” the 26-year-old stated.
When quizzed about Bron Breakker replacing Bron Lesnar at Royal Rumble and comparisons with the Beast Incarnate, the Georgia native welcomed a challenge from the legendary wrestler who has been on an exhile of late.
Breakker is also hoping to finally claim the Intercontinental title and face John Cena, who hasn’t won the elusive title in his career till date.
“Well, as far as I know, John Cena has never won the Intercontinental Championship. After I beat Sami Zayn this weekend and become the new Intercontinental Champion, Cena’s never won the championship I’ll be holding. If he wants some, he can get some,” concluded Breakker.
