John Cena May Not Face Greatest Opponent on Retirement Tour

John Cena has had one of the most storied careers in professional wrestling history.

After making his unofficial WWE debut in 2000, Cena would go on to win 16 world championships, the WWE United States Championship five times, and four tag team titles. Cena also won Money in the Bank in 2012 and the Royal Rumble twice in 2008 and 2013.

To put it lightly, Cena has had a Hall of Fame-worthy career, and WWE is looking to celebrate it with the John Cena Farewell Tour in 2025.

The former Doctor of Thuganomics will spend all of 2025 with the company that made him famous, likely facing new opponents and some old favorites.

Unfortunately, it looks like one of his greatest rivals may not be involved in the tour.

In a recent interview with Newsweek to promote the Pure Plank, Adam Copeland, formerly known as Edge, revealed that it’s doubtful he’ll be involved in the John Cena Farewell Tour.

“You know what, I have no idea,” Copeland said. “No idea whatsoever. AEW would be open to it, but there’s so many different variables and red tape and contracts and all of those things. Could it happen? I don’t know. Maybe. Would it? I doubt it.”

“But I’ll be watching from afar and wishing him all the best because I really feel that John and I brought the best out of each other. And we both needed each other, especially at the time that we ended up facing each other. And again, you don’t know that until it’s happening, like, ‘Oooh, we got something here, man.'”

Copeland continued to say that his rivalry and matches with Cena were “one of my favorite parts of my career.”

Copeland made his WWE debut in 1996 as a short-notice opponent for Bob Holly. A couple of years later, Copeland teamed with Gangrel alongside Christian Cage to form The Brood.

Then known as Edge, he and Christian quickly became one of the top tag teams in the company, having multiple iconic matches against the Hardy Boyz and the Dudley Boys.

Copeland soon solidified himself as a singles competitor by winning the 2001 King of the Ring tournament, going on to win multiple mid-card titles before claiming the WWE Championship with the first successful Money in the Bank cash-in on a bloody Cena.

Copeland would go on to win numerous world titles in WWE. In total, he has won seven World Heavyweight Championships, four WWE Championships, five Intercontinental Championships, one United States Championship, and 14 tag team titles.

He has also won the Royal Rumble twice and was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2012.

After a surprise retirement and an even more surprising return to WWE, Copeland found himself at AEW, winning the AEW TNT Championship twice.
