Los Angeles Lakers legend LeBron James and his son Bronny James are set to make history this season with Lakers coach J.J. Redick hinting that the father-son duo will appear alongside each other on an NBA court this season.
Never in NBA history have a father and son featured on the same court in a competitive match but after new comments from Los Angeles Lakers coach J.J. Redick, it looks like history will be made this season.
LeBron James’ son Bronny signed a $7.9 million rookie contract with the Los Angeles Lakers franchise in July. Amidst whispers of nepotism and quiet critics, the 55th pick in the 2024 NBA Draft he assured Lakers fans that he is ready to deal with the pressure of playing alongside his famed father.
While coach J.J. Redick suggested that Bronny would undergo a rigorous development plan to ease him into the NBA he also states that he plans to give Bronny his debut in the first few months of the season saying “It’s going to happen sooner rather than later.”
“We don’t have anything planned per se in terms of commitment to do it this way,” said Redick. “We obviously have talked about it as a staff, and we’ve gotten into some specifics of what that might look like, but we haven’t committed to anything. Obviously, there’s a discussion to be had once we’re all together with Bronny and LeBron, too. They should be a part of that discussion as well.”
Bronny James, who turns 20 in early October, will likely spend most of his time playing in the developmental G League with the South Bay Lakers as his 39-year-old dad helps push the Lakers towards a title in his 22nd NBA campaign on the back of helping to secure Team USA’s 5th consecutive Olympic basketball gold in Paris.
“I think everyone in this building is cognizant of the fact that he’s almost 40. But when we’ve watched the pickup games, he’s going full tilt. He’s on the court, he’s going,” said Redick.
Redick, who was hired in June after a few years as an ESPN analyst followed a 15-year career in the NBA, has a long association with James and says developing the coach-player relationship is now paramount.
“I think it’s at the early stages of that relationship, particularly because LeBron was doing USA Basketball for most of the summer,” said Redick. “The biggest thing is just the communication that we already inherently have that’s just continued to grow.”
