Love Story of a Champion: Garbine Muguruza Marries Fan in Hollywood-Themed Marbella Celebration!

Former Wimbledon champion Garbine Muguruza has tied the knot with a fan she met in Central Park while playing at the US Open.

Muguruza officially announced her retirement from the sport in April, with the Spanish-Venezuelan ending her career with two Grand Slam titles.

She triumphed at the French Open in 2016, before claiming the Wimbledon women’s singles title by downing Serena Williams in straight sets 7-5, 6-0 the following year.

Muguruza, who became the world number one in 2017, met her future husband Arthur Borges by chance when competing at the US Open in 2021.

‘My hotel was close to Central Park and I was bored, so I thought I should go for a walk,’ Muguruza explained last year.

‘Suddenly, he turns and says, “Good luck at the U.S. Open.” I was left thinking, “Wow, he’s so handsome.”‘

Muguruza was ultimately knocked out in the fourth round in New York, but began a romantic relationship with Borges, with the pair having famously taken a selfie together.

The couple got to know each other by regularly strolling through Central Park.

Borges – a businessman and model – proposed to Muguruza in May last year, with the tennis star sharing the news on Instagram by writing ‘You had me at “Hello”‘.

Born in Spain but having lived most of his life in Finland, Borges met his wife-to-be while working in New York for Tom Ford.

The couple tied the knot in a ceremony in Marbella, with 90 guests from around the world in attendance.

Speaking to Spanish-language publication ¡Hola!, Muguruza revealed her wedding had a Hollywood based theme.

‘It’s totally out of a movie. I knew I would marry him even before he asked me,’ Muguruza said. ‘When we met, it was love at first sight and we quickly realised we were an ideal couple.

‘I was inspired by the golden age of Hollywood, by those dresses worn by Marilyn Monroe and Elizabeth Taylor, which are elegant and beautiful and flattering.

‘Even though he hadn’t told me anything, I imagined Arthur dressed like that, because I knew he was going to go traditional. He looked gorgeous.

‘When I saw him at the altar I thought, “Oh, my man is so handsome!”‘

Muguruza’s former doubles partner Carla Suarez Navarro and coach Conchita Martinez were among the guests in attendance at the wedding.

Since retiring from tennis earlier this year, Muguruza was appointed as the tournament director for the WTA Finals in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
