Novak Djokovic issued some heartfelt comments about Rafael Nadal’s retirement after reaching the Shanghai Masters semi-finals.
The Serbian has given almost 20 years to tennis and he has carved out a legacy as one of the game’s greatest players.
His career is heavily intertwined with Rafael Nadal’s, who he played against 60 times and emerged victorious on 31 occasions.
The Spaniard pushed him to improve, as did Roger Federer and Andy Murray and altogether they created arguably the best era in men’s tennis history.
But with two of them retired and another due to hang up his racket soon, Djokovic stands alone from that era, and it weighs heavy on him.
Novak Djokovic conducted an on-court interview after beating teenager Jakub Menšík to reach the last four in Shanghai for the ninth time. He was asked about Nadal, who will retire from tennis after November’s Davis Cup finals.
Djokovic was very honest about his feelings of his biggest rival leaving the sport, in addition to Federer and Murray, all of whom pushed him more than any other players throughout his career.
“I posted on Instagram and meant every word. He has been my greatest rival. The rivalry I had with him has impacted me the most in my career by far,” the Serbian said.
“We knew that moment was coming sooner rather than later but it was still a shock when it came officially, also for Roger when he announced his retirement a few years ago and Andy as well. It’s a bit overwhelming for me to be honest, I don’t know what to make of it.

“I still enjoy competing but a part of me left with them, a big part of me, so it’s tough news for the tennis world and the sports world. Rafa has been and is an inspiration to millions of children around the world.”
Djokovic and Nadal produced arguably the greatest rivalry in men’s tennis history. They both pushed one another to improve their level and they rescinded with their epic matches.
This is why the 24-time Grand Slam champion wants to be in Malaga to pay his respects to Nadal when he competes for the final time at the Davis Cup.
“Rafa, one post is not enough to express the respect I have for you and what you have done for our sport,” Djokovic wrote on X. “You have inspired millions of children to start playing tennis and I think that’s probably greatest achievement anyone can wish for.
“Your tenacity, dedication, fighting spirit is going to be taught for decades. Your legacy will live forever. Only you know what you had to endure to become icon of tennis and sport in general.
“Thank you for pushing me to the very limit so many times in our rivalry that has impacted me the most as a player. Your passion for representing Spain has always been remarkable.
“I wish you best possible farewell in Malaga with Davis Cup team of Spain. I will be there in person to pay respect to your stellar career.”
