On the day of his career retirement, Roger Federer broke down in tears

The Laver Cup is an ATP tournament but does not count points. This year’s tournament takes place from September 23 to September 25 at the O2 Arena in London, England.

The European team consists of Casper Ruud, Nadal, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Novak Djokovic, Federer, Berrettini and Cameron Norrie. The World team consists of Taylor Fritz, Felix Auger-Aliassime, Diego Schwartzman, Frances Tiafoe, Alex de Minaur, Jack Sock and Tommy Paul.

Roger Federer’s farewell match attracted special attention from the tennis world. Federer was drawn to pair up with Rafael Nadal, just as the Swiss “Express Train” had wanted.

The crowd gave Roger Federer a special treat as he walked out of the O2 Arena tunnel. The Swiss player walked alongside teammate Rafael Nadal in the final match of the day and also the last of his career. The first set was quite a tight affair.

While the duo Federer and Nadal showed their understanding and experience, the opponents of the world team, the duo Jack Sock and Frances Tiafoe, also played very uncomfortably with their youth. The turning point came in the 12th game where the experience of the two European players spoke up. Federer and Nadal won the only break and won the first set with a score of 6-4.

The world duo rose strongly at the beginning of the second set and broke in the third game to lead 3-1. But it didn’t take long for Federer and Nadal to equalize the first set with a break point in the sixth game and tie the score at 3-3. Unfortunately, the two European players couldn’t maintain their form and lost the set with a score of 6-7.

Federer fans will be left feeling even more disappointed in the super tie-break. The world duo of Jack Sock and Frances Tiafoe won 11-9 to take the overall victory.

After being defeated 6-4, 6-7 (2), 9-11 by Jack Sock/Frances Tiafoe, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal lost, leaving the European team tied 2-2 with the World team as the first day of this year’s Laver Cup ended.

The Swiss legend waves to the audience

Federer’s glorious 24-year professional tennis journey officially ended after this match. Italian tennis player Matteo Berrettini will replace FedEx to play the remaining 2 days of the 2022 Laver Cup.

Federer has officially ended his 24-year professional career. He will go on holiday with his wife and children, but it is unclear what he will do after that. Federer said he may try his hand at commentating at Wimbledon. Or, if his fitness allows, he may play exhibition matches. ” I will not be a ghost after I retire,” said the 20-time Grand Slam winner. “Tennis fans will always see me.”

Nadal also cried

On the day he said goodbye to his career, Federer couldn’t hold back his tears. “I’m not sad, I’m happy to have overcome this moment,” Federer said, choking up.

The 20-time Grand Slam champion cried even more as he entered the stands after the match, hugging his parents, wife and children. It was a tearful farewell, but a happy moment for FedEx.

Nadal has not regained his form, while Federer shows signs of losing steam due to age.
Federer and Nadal faced each other from March 2004 to July 2019, with 40 matches, in which the Swiss player won 16 and lost 24. It was Nadal who broke Federer’s Grand Slam record, winning 22 men’s singles titles at major tournaments. But the two players always had kind words for each other despite being considered rivals.
