The world No. 6 retired in the fourth round of the US Open against fellow American Emma Navarro. Navarro was the same opponent who defeated Gauff in the fourth round of Wimbledon a few months ago.

Since 2023, Gilbert has been one of the coaching staff that has helped Coco Gauff rise to the level of winning her first Grand Slam title with a victory at the 2023 US Open, as well as championships in Cincinnati and Washington.

However, in the current season, Gauff suffered a series of early defeats after reaching the semifinals at the French Open and Berlin, being eliminated at Wimbledon, the third round of the Olympics, the second round of Toronto and the first round of Cincinnati before retiring at Flushing Meadows. The outcome led Gauff to decide to fire coach Gilbert.

“Mentally and emotionally, I gave it my all. But there were some inconsistencies in my execution, I wish I could have served better. I think if I had served better, it would have been a different match,” Gauff said after losing to Navarro.

Coco Gauff failed to defend her US Open title.

Coach Gilbert expressed his gratitude to Gauff on social network X (formerly Twitter): “Thank you Coco Gauff and the team for an amazing summer in 2023 and an incredible 14 months of hard work from all of us. Coco is only 20 years old, her future is extremely bright and I wish her continued success. I look forward to the next chapter of my coaching career.”

Coco Gauff also responded to her former teacher: “We had a great race and I wish you all the best in the future!”.

So far this season, 20-year-old Coco Gauff has successfully defended her Auckland Classic title and reached the semi-finals of the Australian Open.
