Sinner hits week 20 at number 1, with Sabalenka at week 9
Jannik Sinner equals legend Mats Wilander’s record
The young Italian tennis player, Sinner made history by spending his 20th week as the world No. 1 in the ATP rankings. This achievement puts him on par with the legendary Mats Wilander, who held the top spot for 20 weeks. With the No. 1 ranking guaranteed until the end of 2024, Sinner will surpass Wilander next week, moving up to 17th place in the list of tennis players with the most weeks at No. 1.
In the ATP rankings, besides Sinner, other players also made their mark last week. Tommy Paul won the Stockholm Open title and rose to No. 12, setting a career-high milestone.
Grigor Dimitrov, despite losing the final to Paul, still collected 155 points, allowing him to swap places with Alex de Minaur to climb to No. 9. Karen Khachanov made a strong impression with her victory at the Almaty Open, helping him move up to No. 24.
Meanwhile, in the ATP rankings, positions 2 to 8 remain the same, with Carlos Alcaraz, Alexander Zverev, Novak Djokovic, Daniil Medvedev, Andrey Rublev, Taylor Fritz and Casper Ruud occupying the rankings respectively.
Two star tennis players, Rafael Nadal increased 2 places compared to last week. Ly Hoang Nam dropped 1 place although he still kept the same score as last week.
Aryna Sabalenka officially usurps Iga Swiatek’s No. 1 position
In the WTA rankings, Sabalenka has officially surpassed Iga Swiatek to take the world No. 1 position. Both players did not compete last week, but due to points deducted from WTA 500 tournaments, Sabalenka surpassed her Polish opponent. With a total of 9,706 points, Sabalenka surpassed Swiatek with 9,665 points.
Sabalenka held the No. 1 ranking after the 2023 US Open for eight weeks and now returns to the top of the WTA rankings for the ninth time in her career. Both Sabalenka and Swiatek will continue their fierce race when the season ends at the WTA Finals.
Swiatek needs to defend her WTA Finals title without losing a match to have a chance to return to the No. 1 position. Meanwhile, Sabalenka only needs to win at least 2 group stage matches to secure the top position until the end of the year.
Daria Kasatkina also made a strong impression when she returned to the WTA top 10 after winning the Ningbo Open. She is currently ranked 9th in the world. In addition, young player Mirra Andreeva also continued to rise to a career-high No. 16 after finishing second at the Ningbo tournament.
