Liv Morgan has had a breakout year in WWE in 2024, becoming a world champion for the third time in her career and standing atop the RAW women’s division as the top heel in the women’s division. Throughout recent times and even over the course of her career, it is easy to see many of Morgan’s positives and why she has been pushed as a champion.
Cody Rhodes is one of WWE’s biggest stars today. The American Nightmare has many strengths, but there are some aspects which he can further work on.
There is also a flip side though, as Morgan does also have several weaknesses. We will look at her biggest strengths and weaknesses which have been on display throughout her career in professional wrestling.
Strength: Liv Morgan Is A Reliable In-Ring Worker
Morgan Has Solid Fundamentals
- WWE can trust Liv Morgan between the ropes
- She doesn’t have many “bad” matches
- She is a very solid, reliable wrestler and has been for a long time
We will assess the quality of Liv Morgan’s in-ring work compared to WWE’s best later on, but it is important to note that Morgan is one of the more reliable workers in WWE’s women’s division, and she has been for some time.
Morgan rarely has any bad matches and she can work well against pretty much anyone. Aside from one dud here or there, the majority of Morgan’s matches have been average at worst, showing her strong fundamentals.
Weakness: Liv Morgan Cannot Pull Off The Alexa Bliss-Style Spooky Character
WWE Tried Her Under This Sort Of Gimmick In 2022
- WWE tried to make Liv Morgan the next Alexa Bliss
- She became unhinged and spooky
- Her run as a Harley Quinn type of character was terrible
Due to her run as a top star not going quite to plan in 2022, WWE tried a new character with Liv Morgan as she became unhinged, laughed maniacally, and tried to replicate some of the elements Alexa Bliss did well as a Harley Quinn type of heel.
Morgan’s performances were way too over-the-top and cartoony, and it simply did not work. Her acting here was poor, and she wasn’t helped out by booking either.
Strength: Liv Morgan Worked Well As An Underdog Challenger
She Proved Herself As A Great Underdog In 2021/2022
- Morgan got naturally over with fans due to her endearing persona
- Her feud with Becky Lynch served as her breakout moment
- This feud proved that Morgan could make it in WWE
Liv Morgan has played plenty of different roles in WWE, and one of her most successful spells came at the back end of 2021 and into 2022 when she played a plucky, underdog babyface, vying to breakout against Becky Lynch.
Their feud over the RAW Women’s Championship was strong, and Morgan managed to get fans on her side purely for her babyface aura alone. With a more endearing and natural character, Morgan connected with fans easily.
Weakness: Liv Morgan Failed To Play A Convincing Babyface Champion
Morgan Is Better As A Heel
- Whilst Morgan was a good underdog, she not a good babyface champion
- Her babyface promo work failed to connect
- Her reigns as SmackDown Women’s Champion were a failure
Altough Liv Morgan showcased great fire as an underdog babyface during her feud with Becky Lynch, she crumbled when she won the SmackDown Women’s Championship later on in 2022.
Rhea Ripley’s 5 Biggest Strengths In Wrestling (& 3 Biggest Weaknesses)
Like any elite athlete, Rhea Ripley faces challenges and weaknesses that define her career and personality in and out of the WWE ring.
Morgan simply did not work as a babyface world champion, leading SmackDown. Her mic work in this role was poor, her character was messy, and she failed to retain her connection to the audience. Feuds with the likes of Ronda Rousey & Shayna Baszler were a failure.
Strength: Liv Morgan’s Partnership With Dominik Mysterio Is Pure Gold
Her Character Alongside Mysterio Is One Of The Best Things On WWE TV
- Morgan & Mysterio have great chemistry
- They receive more heat than most acts in WWE
- This has been Morgan’s best spell in the company
One of the biggest strengths of Liv Morgan is her alliance with Dominik Mysterio. Their act has been a major hit in WWE since it began at SummerSlam 2024, with the pair showcasing remarkable chemistry, and able to draw a major amount of heat – more than most acts in WWE.
This partnership has been the best thing for both of them, working perfectly as an unlikable pairing.
Weakness: Liv Morgan Needed Others To Become A Star
Morgan Cannot Stand On Her Own Two Feet
- Morgan has failed as a singles star in the past
- She has risen to the top thanks to Dominik Mysterio
- It could be argued that her success is due to being alongside others
Whilst it isn’t a bad thing for Liv Morgan to be helped out by others to become a bigger star, it could still be argued as a weakness on her part. Morgan’s current heat and success as a heel is piggybacked from Dominik Mysterio’s heat.
Throughout her WWE run, Morgan has stumbled here and there with various pushes, but is now succeeding due to being alongside Mysterio and the Judgment Day.
Strength: Liv Morgan’s Heel Work Is Very Good
Her Heel Turn In 2024 Helped Her Become A Star
- Morgan’s character has been strong this year
- Her promo work as a heel has been very good
- She feels more natural as a villain
Liv Morgan has proven in 2024 that she is very effective as a villainous character. Her work as a heel since her return from injury has helped to turn her into more of a star – much more than she ever has been in the past.
Morgan has looked at her most comfortable as a villain, and in hindsight it took WWE way too long to get her to this point.
She Is Good, But Not World Class
Liv Morgan’s Highest Rated Matches | Event | Cagematch.Net Rating |
---|---|---|
Liv Morgan vs. Becky Lynch | WWE RAW 03/11/2024 | 7.62 |
Liv Morgan vs. Asuka | WWE RAW 04/06/2020 | 7.46 |
Liv Morgan vs. Zelina Vega | WWE RAW 07/01/2024 | 7.16 |
Liv Morgan vs. Sonya Deville | WWE SmackDown 10/28/2022 | 7.01 |
Liv Morgan vs. Becky Lynch | WWE RAW 12/06/2021 | 6.92 |
As noted, Morgan carries a lot of solid fundamentals between the ropes, but she hasn’t reached the next step in terms of in-ring quality. She has never had a memorable singles match in the company that will be remembered for years to come, which is reflective of her level in the ring.
In her biggest matches PLE against the likes of Ronda Rousey, Rhea Ripley, and more, Morgan has had some of the worst matches on those particular cards.
Strength: Liv Morgan Is Very Strong At Subtle Storytelling
Morgan’s Face Showcases A Lot Of Emotion
- Her facial expressions do a lot of work
- This has been evident throughout her feud with Rhea Ripley
- The “little things” are always important in WWE
WWE is all about selling stories, and Liv Morgan is someone who has become very good at doing so, particularly when it comes to the subtleties in her performances.
4 Things WWE NEEDS To Do To Fix Raw’s Women’s Division
The Raw Women’s Division has taken a bit of a backseat in recent months. How can WWE fix its problem?
Morgan’s facial expressions are some of the best in WWE, with her able to show an evil happiness, massive fear, sadness, anger, and love, all very effectively. This helps her tell stories and make her feuds feel more authentic, as has been the case during her lengthy storyline with Rhea Ripley.
Weakness: Liv Morgan Doesn’t Carry A Lot Of Major Star Power
Morgan Isn’t Necessarily A Draw In WWE
- Morgan’s size and height takes away from her presence
- Her mic work is good, but not as good as others
- She doesn’t feel like a main eventer
One of the biggest downsides to Liv Morgan is the fact that she doesn’t quite hold the star power of someone who can lead WWE. She falls short of the likes of Rhea Ripley, Bianca Belair, Tiffany Stratton, Becky Lynch, and others.
Whether this be her size compared to others, or the fact that she doesn’t carry the same sort of presence to convincingly headline a WWE PLE.
