CM Punk has been asked the John Cena question which is consistently a talking point.
In just over a year’s time, Cena will compete in his final WWE match, bringing to a close a 22-year career that is filled with just about every accolade there is to achieve. With spots limited for final matches, fans have speculated as to who the Hollywood star’s final opponent could be and if it would be a first-time-ever opponent, a championship match or one of his greatest rivals.
Punk has a history with Cena and the two famously feuded in 2011 with a critically acclaimed match at Money in the Bank in Chicago. While speaking with 1035 Kiss FM, Punk stated that it would have to be a question for Cena himself before saying that he would also be available if called upon:
“Oh gosh. I’d have to ask John. Everybody’s gonna have their two cents of what they do. But what I love about John coming out and saying, like, ‘Hey, this is it. This is going to be a journey that we’re all going to go on together. And this is it for me.’ I really like that, because I think he gets to kind of write his love letter to pro wrestling on his way out.
“So I’ve always said this since he announced he was going to retire. If he wants to get in the ring with me, whether it’s tag or whatever, I’d be flattered. But if I’m not part of that story, that’s that’s great too. I’m going to be a fan, just like everybody else sitting there and watching it, like I’m excited to see what he wants to do, what he’s going to do, what’s going to happen.”
Continuing, Punk acknowledged that while Randy Orton is the fans’ choice to be Cena’s final opponent, he feels that the 16-time World Champion will want to make sure the final match will be a meaningful one:
“He’s had such a great career. I think it’s easy to say, you could say Randy. I think some people would say me. Knowing John, I’m assuming it’s going to be somebody new someone he can hand the baton to. So it might be Gunther, it might be somebody that he has his eye on that nobody else is really seeing. You don’t know. That’s what’s exciting to me about it really.”
At Bad Blood on October 5th, Punk will finally end his rivalry with Drew McIntyre as he faces off against The Scottish Psychopath inside Hell in a Cell. With the rivalry being extended due to Punk’s injury, the former World Champion has had a limited number of matches since he returned and is looking to make up for lost time. During the same interview, CM Punk listed off a number of dream opponents he wants to face in WWE.
H/t to WrestleZone.
